Server operations in Germany

Your application runs. I make sure it stays that way.

Operations, moves off AWS, Azure or Vercel, and takeovers of systems whose developer has left. On servers in Germany.

For companies, agencies and startups with their own web app, customer portal or backend that nobody reliably looks after.

Where you are

Nobody knows whether the backup works.

There is one, probably. Nobody has ever tried to restore anything from it.

Updates pile up.

Because any update might break something, and nobody has time to check afterwards.

The one person who knew the server has left.

The credentials are in an old email, the documentation in their head.

The cloud bill grows faster than the usage.

And your data sits with a provider you have doubts about, where it really should not be anymore.

Scope

  • Inventory. Servers, services, access, backups, updates and costs, in writing, with the risks and a plan in the right order.

  • Migration and rebuild. A move to servers in Germany, for example at Hetzner or netcup: Docker, Caddy, Postgres, automatic certificates, with a way back until everything demonstrably runs.

  • Ongoing operations. Updates, backups with regular restore tests, round-the-clock monitoring, certificates and small changes, with a fixed response time.

  • Everything on one server. Where it fits, your application runs with its database, file storage and backups on one server that I set up and run through my own control plane. Instead of a separate bill for every cloud service, there is one server and one contact.

  • Takeover and further development. I read into existing code, document it, secure its operation and keep developing it if you want.

  • Deployment. Automatic delivery from the repository, so an update is no longer an event but a commit.

Process

  1. Step 1: Short call

15 to 30 minutes, free. What runs, where it hurts, what it may cost.

  2. Step 2: Check

Read-only access, inventory, written report with a plan.

  3. Step 3: Implementation

Migration or clean-up at a fixed price, with a way back and documentation.

  4. Step 4: Operations

Monthly, with a fixed response time. Or you carry on yourself from there, with the documentation.

zyric.de and my own systems

This website and most of my projects run on a server at Hetzner, operated through Foundation, the control plane I built for it: Docker, Postgres, Redis and Caddy as managed resources behind one audited interface.

miBaguette(opens in a new tab)

A restaurant's website, pre-ordering, reservations and dashboard, built and run by me. Every path stands on its own: if the database fails, the emails still go out; if the mail provider fails, the order is still in the dashboard.

Substreak and Enjin Governance

Backend services and a governance client in continuous operation, with live connections to the blockchain, automatic distributions and interfaces other systems depend on. Over 150,000 on-chain operations processed in continuous operation.

Panoptes and RepoCanary

Security is not an add-on for me: Panoptes is my own research into AI-assisted security reviews, RepoCanary an open scanner for malicious code in repositories.

I am one person, not a data centre and not a hotline. That is why your servers run in your own account, the access stays with you, and the documentation is written so that someone else can take over. That protects you, not me, and that is exactly why I do it this way.

Questions

Does moving from AWS to Hetzner really save that much?

Often yes, but not always as much as the adverts say. Hetzner raised its prices noticeably in 2026. I calculate with current prices and the effort of the move, and if it does not pay off for you, I say so.

Who owns the server?

You do. It runs in your account with the provider, and you pay the provider directly, with no markup through me. I get access that you can revoke at any time.

Is that GDPR compliant, then?

A server in Germany does not make an application compliant with data protection law by itself. I implement the technical measures (encryption, access rights, logging, backups) and help with the data processing agreement and the description of the technical and organisational measures. The legal assessment is made by your data protection officer.

Do you also take over applications someone else built?

Yes, that is one of the most common reasons for the check. I work with TypeScript, Next.js, Node, Python, Postgres and Docker. If it is a technology I do not know well, I say so in the check instead of learning it at your expense.

What happens if you are not reachable?

Monitoring, backups and updates run automatically. The response time is in the contract. In case I am out for longer, there is the documentation and your own access, so someone else can take over.

Do you only work locally?

No. Most projects run fully remote over video calls, including with clients I have never met in person. I am based near Pforzheim in Germany and happy to come by in the region when a meeting on site helps.
